asian american woman on driving

i've been having some issues lately; well ONE that has been bothering me for, oh, i don't know... the past year. a year ago i came out to visit one of my dearest friends. i spent my time there walking through her city, sleeping in her bed, and i spent my time with her friends. on a clear, crisp day we were heading to the local university to visit a friend of ours and then it happened. a string of cars turned left on a green light, rushing in front of traffic traveling straight, who had the right of way. mind you, i said a string... meaning two or three antsy cars, who darted in front of drivers whose reactions weren't immediate at the sign of green. i'm safely tucked away in the back seat clutching a salad when the driver (and my dear friends, dear friend) remarks on the shape of his eyes, and follows it with, "i'm just sayin'". clearly uncomfortable and out of everything familiar, i just sit and want to snort. not a validating, 'i'm on your side' snort, but a snort at how disgusting a remark like that is. another friend of mine riding shotgun responds that at least he wasn't a woman. i'm unsure if it was to diffuse the situation by having a car of offended women, as opposed to an offended visitor (ironic, no?), but it didn't work. i had to respond stating that i, as an asian woman, have no issue navigating the streets. my dear friend laughs uncomfortably at how well i handled the situation. well meaning i didn't respond questioning the relevance of ethnicity on norcal city streets traffic, nor did i respond the irony that as a woman, the driver is herself stereotyped and maybe she's projecting these feelings on to another minority to ease the social pain she feels. but i didn't waste my breath. but what do i do now? this same person will be staying in my apartment in a few months, and again, in my own home i'm already feeling uncomfortable around this, well, racist.
